Investigating the Impact of Wind on Buildings Using a Drone

The aim of this project was to enable students to investigate the effects of wind on different buildings and building structures using a drone. During the activity, learners acquired practical experience in capturing drone footage under varying wind conditions and in organising and analysing the collected data in order to identify structural deformation, vibration, or potential damage.

At the beginning of the project, students gained theoretical knowledge about wind dynamics, aerodynamic effects, and the resistance of building structures to wind loads. They became familiar with instruments used to measure wind speed and air pressure, as well as with sensors that can be mounted on a drone, such as air pressure, speed, and temperature sensors.

During the practical phase, students observed different types of buildings and roof structures, recorded movements, vibrations, and deformations caused by wind, and then systematically analysed the collected data and drone footage. Working in groups, learners identified structural weak points and proposed measures to improve the stability and resilience of the structures.

Throughout the project, students developed technical and digital competences, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as well as teamwork and collaboration abilities. The use of drones enabled safe, rapid, and detailed inspection that would be difficult to achieve using traditional inspection methods.

As part of the activity, students learned how to plan flight routes, collect sensor data, perform visual and technical analysis, and prepare professional documentation. Based on the collected data, learners were able to understand the interaction between wind and buildings, identify problematic structural elements, and propose further investigations or reinforcement measures where necessary.

The project connected theoretical knowledge with practical application and provided students with the opportunity to carry out observation, measurement, and analysis on real buildings. During the activity, learners also developed awareness of the importance of safety regulations, ethical and responsible drone use, and the management of risks arising from wind loads.

Overall, this project allowed students to apply modern drone technology to develop professional, technical, digital, and personal competences while practising the visual inspection of roof structures, identifying and documenting defects, and preparing for real-world tasks in the construction sector.
